What is the Corten effect finish?

The Corten effect finish It is a painted coating that reproduces the patina of controlled oxidation of cor-ten steel: reddish-brown tones, raw texture and a feeling of industrial solidity.

Unlike real Corten steel, the painted finish is distinguished by:

  • Applicable on any medium — wood, MDF, composites, metal
  • Low weight — no structural constraints on steel
  • Stable patina — does not evolve over time (unlike Real Corten)
  • Lower cost — especially on large surfaces
  • Workability — shapes and geometries impossible with steel

Cycle: preparation → primer → base metal → Corten patina → transparent UV protective.

Who is the Corten effect finish for

Architects and landscape designers
For facades, cladding and landscape elements with Corten aesthetics on lightweight supports.

Urban furniture designer
Who are looking for weathered aesthetics on cheaper and more workable materials.

Manufacturers of paneling and cladding
For large surfaces with a Corten effect without the weight of steel.

Specialized applicators
Who are looking for reliable Corten cycles with Molteni Vernici technical assistance.

Applications

Corten effect finishes are used in:

Architectural facades — coatings with Corten aesthetics on lightweight supports.
Paneling and dividers — accent walls with an industrial character.
Urban furniture and landscape — planters, seats, signage elements.
Retail and hospitality — environments with an industrial-chic atmosphere.
Furnishing accessories — tables, consoles and elements with Corten patina.

Compatible Substrates

The application cycles are adapted to the support:

Metal (steel, aluminum) — with anticorrosive primer.
Wood and MDF — with sealing base for compactness.
Composites and sandwich panels — with universal high adhesion primer.

Corten patina is one of the most requested effects for architectural applications. The Molteni Vernici laboratory defines the specific cycle for each project.

FAQ

What's the difference with real Corten steel?

Corten steel is a structural material that oxidizes naturally. The painted finish reproduces the same appearance on any support, without the weight, cost and constraints of real steel.

Does the Corten patina continue to evolve?

No. Unlike real steel, the painted finish is stable over time. The patina remains as applied, protected by the transparent.

Is it suitable for external facades?

Yes, it is one of the main applications. The cycle includes UV-resistant clear for outdoor durability.

On which materials does it apply?

Metal, wood, MDF, composites and sandwich panels. Each support has a dedicated cycle.

How much does it weigh compared to the real Corten?

The painted finish does not add significant weight to the support. On MDF or composites, the weight is a fraction of real steel.

Is it possible to vary the intensity of the patina?

Yes. From freshly oxidized (lighter) to very aged (darker and more variegated) Corten.

How is it maintained over time?

Minimal maintenance. Outdoors, periodically check the integrity of the protective cover.

Are there technical data sheets available?

Yes. Complete documentation with external durability parameters and ISO/EN certifications.

How long for the application?

The cycle takes 7-10 days including patina layering and UV protection.

What is the cost compared to Corten steel?

Significantly lower, especially on large surfaces. Eliminate steel processing, welding and treatment.
